A school older than most of Mukhed's living memory

Established in 1950, ZPHS (Boys) Mukhed is now well past its seventy-fifth year — old enough that in many Mukhed households, a grandfather, father and son may all have passed through the same classrooms. Run by the Zilla Parishad, the school sits in the urban part of Mukhed taluka, and despite the name, it's actually co-educational today, teaching Grades 1 through 10 with an attached pre-primary section. Instruction is in Marathi, and the academic year opens in April, in line with government schools across the state.

Any government school speaks through its building, and that's true here too. Four classrooms, all in usable condition, a separate room for the headmaster, and two more rooms for other work — it's not a large footprint, but it's enough for a school sitting on the edge between rural and urban Mukhed. The lack of a boundary wall is one recorded gap, but the basics are in place: electricity, a functioning tap-water supply, and working toilets for both boys and girls. There's a playground, and a small library of 249 books — not large, but not nothing either. One computer is in use for teaching, though there's no dedicated computer-lab setup yet. And every day, a mid-day meal is cooked right on the school premises — a steady, unremarkable part of many students' day.
